This 17,500 square foot project adds 11 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and restrooms to the existing Reading Elementary School. In addition to new construction, the project also includes the strategic reorganization of the existing school in order to better facilitate the workings of the administration and to accommodate changes in curriculum that have occurred since the construction of the original building.
The design for the addition integrates with the existing structure through the creation of a courtyard and public space located between the existing media center and the proposed multi-purpose room. The form of the classroom portion of the addition is shaped by the need to accommodate the existing slope of the site which is resolved through the stepped repetition of a module which consists of two classrooms on either side of a ramping corridor and skylight. The resulting form from the exterior references the individual classroom units within the larger whole while on the interior creates a path of travel that is characterized by a rhythm of ramps and day-lighted landings.
